Williams said the performance of the Kenworth T equipped with a inch sleeper and a hp PACCAR MX engine taught him that he didn't have to sacrifice performance for fuel and weight savings by choosing a liter engine over a liter engine. Not even when his company's trucks haul open-deck, specialized or over-sized loads over mountain passes in the West.

Williams said COTC instead got a big helping of fuel economy savings and comparable power and torque performance when compared to the results of trucks equipped with liter engines. Central Oregon Truck Company generally replaces its trucks when they reachmiles. That's why we changed delivery dates to this year versus next year for many of these trucks. Williams refers to his company's drivers as driving team members because he believes the description more accurately reflects the importance of these employees to his company.

It's also why he cares what they think of the equipment his company chooses for them to drive. They also like the improved visibility that comes from the T's panoramic windshield and they really like the rotating passenger seat and the rotating table that they can use to fill out their paperwork during their breaks. Out West, we pull loads over more hills. So, we need a truck with an engine that provides the power we need.

Designed for linehaul and vocational heavy duty truck operators, the PACCAR MX utilizes the latest common rail fuel-delivery technology, which enables injection pressures of up to 2, bar significantly enhancing fuel efficiency and performance. The common rail system uses controls to regulate the fuel in a central manifold, only compressing the amount of fuel mixture needed.

The result is finer fuel atomization for optimized combustion, enabling lower fuel consumption and emissions. Central Oregon Truck Co. Williams attributes his company's success to a laser-like focus on every performance aspect of the company's all-Kenworth fleet of trucks. The company keeps close tabs on vehicle performance and governs the engines to 62 mph. Idling is limited and drivers are encouraged to check tire pressures regularly.

In addition to the improved fuel economy, Williams said the T model equipped with the PACCAR MX engine also offers his company the ability to provide driving team members more amenities for greater comfort without concerns over potential weight penalties.

Whenever we spec our trucks, we have to keep that constantly top of mind. If we can't haul 48, to 49, pounds because of the additional weight of the amenities we've chosen to attract and retain driving team members, then why would they hire us?

I would say Cummins for when it comes too Heavy Haul and mountain climbing. If you're on flat land pulling light get a Paccar and save some of the fuel as they are good with fuel economy. However I dont like paccar for the ease of parts and service. Cant take it know where but too the dealer. For many years, the race to the top in the diesel engine world was defined by size and power.

The trend toward bigger engines peaked around or Those with or newer had engines averaging In more recent years, liter engines have emerged as the favorite spec for new heavy-duty trucks. Navistar saw the trend toward liter power coming some years ago as customers became more focused on weight, payload and fuel efficiency, said Steve Gilligan, vice president of vocational and product marketing.

Detroit also offers two big-bore diesels: Its liter DD15, offering to horsepower, and its liter DD16 with a power rating of to horsepower. The popular Cummins ISX15 is an integrated driver-friendly engine suited for long-haul, Rumsey says, while the Cummins ISX12 — which shares common components with the ISX15 — has been optimized for regional hauling and less-than-truckload operations, as well as vocational applications such as dumps and mixer trucks and fire and emergency vehicles.

We can now meet customer needs regarding power while improving fuel economy without sacrificing engine life. Conversely, liter engines work out to horsepower, or 30 horsepower per liter. During disassembly and inspection, we were more than pleased with our design criteria being met easily based upon million-mile wear observations. Going even smaller, Mack now has customers using its liter MP7 who are seeing a documented 2 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared with a liter and 3 percent compared with a liter, McKenna says.

Ed Saxman, drivetrain product manager for Volvo Trucks, says Volvo had a liter engine that it increased to 13 liters due to power density so that the top rating could be increased to a full horsepower with 1, lb.

The MX, which debuts in January, is offered in horsepower all the way up to horspower. The same fleets that were running horsepower engines a few years ago may have shifted peak horsepower upward, but torque is relatively unchanged and is well within the efficient operating range of liter engines. Larger-displacement engines can offer higher torque without adversely increasing peak cylinder pressure, Saxman says.

Volvo uses similar designs for both displacements, and the design concept can be used across three displacements, but some part sizes may vary out of necessity. If an acceptable power density from each engine is maintained, the smaller-displacement engine should get better fuel economy since it has lower internal friction, less reciprocating mass and a lower weight.

Bigger is not always better. In addition to weight savings, another liter advantage is packaging.

It wants to run somewhere around rpm, and loses a lot of power at If I was going to buy a truck right now, which I'm not--they're really expensive and I haven't won the lottery yet--I would get a Freightliner Cascadia with hp Detroit DD16, moose-guard bumper, speed autoshift, super single drive tires and 3. Super singles are better for fuel mileage, and the Cascadia has a very nice sleeper.

Adding to the above, the Cummins ISX motors have gotten a lot better since the first generation of them came about. If I were to buy a truck right now and, as above, I'm not intending toit would probably be a Kenworth T with a wet line, 50k rears, a 23k front, and a double frame.

For that application, your only current options are the ISX15 or the I'd run an 18 torque 18 speed Eaton Fuller while it can be a bit excessive for a typical road tractor, the real value of the 18 speed is in off-road and heavy haul applicationsand either 4. It's a niche which the no longer available Caterpillar and Cummins motors are much better suited for than the Detroit. One thing you have to keep in mind, as well, is that, the higher displacement the motor, the higher the tare weight of your vehicle.

Sure, it's nice to have a DD16 Detroit, C16 Cat, or D16 Volvo at least, so long as someone else pays the maintenance bills for the Volvobut they're much heavier in comparison to the motors in the 13 litre range.

By the way, horsepower is less important than what it's made out to be. The Cummins 6. The displacement, powerbands, and torque ratings are much more relevant here. Different strokes for different folks. The Detroit Diesel 60 series is great for over-the-road applications. The Cummins ISX fares better in heavy haul applications and anything which involves going off-road. Sorry, posted in the wrong section! Could someone please move to Trucks for me, thank you!

Aug 13, 4. I have driven both in the same speced truck. Both were hp with 10 speed trans. The MX engine is loud. The turbo was so loud I got out to check for leaks around the turbo.

The MX had decent power. Better than a detriot. The fuel mileage was worse than the cummins by half a mile to the gallon. It was harder to shift. With the engine brake on the rpms would fall to fast and with it off it would fall real slow.SCS Software message board Skip to content. Quick links. I just reached level 18 and unlocked the Cummins ISX I was wondering if there is any real noticeable differences between the two engine options in game.

Does one get better fuel economy than the other? Does the 50HP difference between the two make that much of a difference?

Do they sound different? I have seen some questions about which transmission to use, but haven't seen much discussion about the various engine options.

Thanks, -Mike. The "power" is the kW figure, so the Cummins gives you more Power, slightly. They both have 2,nm of torque. Whether I've actually noticed a power increase I can't say, it's been a while since I upgraded to the Cummins.

One thing I can say for sure, is you will notice the extra power on hill climbs. Maybe that's the point, I don't know. I can't remember if they sound different, and I won't bother changing my engine to find out. The only thing I can assume, is the Cummins is a better engine in SCS's point of view because it's dearer to buy, and it's not available until level Dark subsilver2 theme is based on forum tricolor 's version. The Cummins ISX is a 6-cylinder, in-line engine with a liter capacity.

This engine is very well recommended in the US truck market. Companies such as Freightliner, Volvo and Paccar have used this engine on their tractors from to the present, sincethe second year, the engine was modernized and equipped with an EGR system, which resulted in lower CO emissions to the environment.

Advantages of the Cummins ISX Engine: extended maintenance interval, built-in engine brake, interbrake, with adjustable power from to horsepower. The fuel injection system is more than bar, which allows you to completely burn the fuel in the combustion chamber, due to this the engine has become more economical and environmentally friendly.

The latest versions of the Cummins ISX 15 engine keep getting more fuel-efficient as the technology keeps advancing. Cummins has stated that the newest ISX 15 can deliver up to 2 percent better fuel economy than previously reported. The ratings on the ISX 15 range from hp kW with lb.

The SmartTorque system Cummins developed adds roughly lb. This means that Class 8 trucks can drive up steeper grades with much fewer downshifts making the ride that much smoother and less strenuous on the engine.

For other models of the Cummins ISX engine, the additional torque from the SmartTorque system is applied to the lower gears where it is needed the most. As with any Cummins engine, the Cummins ISX is very reliable but, should it ever break down, there are companies like XL Mechanical, the Blackfalds Dodge diesel truck repair experts who specialise in Cummins engine repairs. PACCAR MX is fully in line with the upward trend in efficiency with small working volumes, responsible for product development and improvement.

The New While the engine employs lots of modern technology to meet strict U. Unlike lots of modern clean-diesel engines, it uses a traditional camshaft mounted inside the engine block with pushrod-operated overhead valves and a single variable-geometry turbocharger instead of a compound setup.

These components help save weight and reduce complexity, but the MX also has plenty of high-tech features meant to maximize fuel efficiency, augment performance, and increase longevity while keeping emissions low. The high-pressure common-rail fuel system operates at more than 36, psi and uses two injection pumps with housings that are integrated into the block that fuel feed pipes built into the block and head.

The oil sump has a large, quart capacity, and the engine uses a full-flow main filter and a centrifugal bypass filter that allows service intervals of up to 60, miles. The combination of new and old tech helps the MX meet modern emissions requirements while delivering a steady supply of hp and 1, lb-ft of torque at less than 1, rpm.
